Tortola: Original Art Watercolor
This painting was created from a scene on the Atlantic side of Tortola, just down the street from the Sugar Mill. Early in Lucinda’s career as an artist, she took lessons from Jean Dobie back in 1989 as a way of learning how to teach a watercolor class. This was only to satisfy a grant condition of coming back to the USVI and teaching a class to the locals. Lucinda had no way of knowing that workshop would be so important in her life as an artist.
It was just after Hurricane Hugo, and the property they rented across the street from the Sugar Mill had no electricity. Elaine, her mother in law who was also an artist booked the class and the room. To say it was challenging was an understatement. Despite the challenges, this trip was a very special time for both artists. This painting shows how the light dances around between the leaves of the Seagrape Tree.
